The Real 'South' of South Island, New Zealand

In the English language, there's a saying signifying that when something has "gone south," like a project or a marriage, that it has completely failed with no hope of going anywhere "north." Well, among the many southern dynamics that beg to differ, including the ever-so-popular Southern Comfort brand of whiskey, and the various species of birds that make the migratory adventure southwards in order to advance the cause of ecology, there is the cultural wonder of South Island, New Zealand.

While named South Island, this bit of land on the global map actually has an international appeal, encompassing the interests of those from all geographical directions. Being an island, it offers adventure and retreat for those who prefer land and those who prefer sea, discriminating against neither one.

On land, hikers and campers find ample opportunity to explore the shallows and depths of a place that is either unknown or known to them. Even if having taken a trip here before, there is always more to return to. Included in the diversity of climate are the cold snows for downhill and cross-country skiers and snowboarders, and the temperate rain forests providing mountain paths and poetic scenery.

There are over twenty ski areas and resorts in South Island, and at least seven major national parks and towns that characterize the natural and cultural wealth of New Zealand.

The internationally famous Milford Track, found in South Island's Fiordland National Park, has been nobly referred to as "The Finest Walk in the World." A place like this exists as a home for those looking for an adventure in body or in mind, giving opportunity to hike and climb till your muscles ache, or to reflect and meditate until your mind is refreshed.

Kaikoura, a South Island coastal town, seems to be becoming an epicenter of those interested in picturesque scenery, both static and moving. For those who dare to trek beyond land and sea into the air, they will find an adventure through Wings over Whales, a flight company offering aerial views of whales and dolphins, and anything else that swims in the world of the ocean.

Without a doubt, the features of New Zealand's South Island advance the burgeoning truth that when someone's "going south" to South Island, they're definitely heading in the right direction.
